Have you tried Catnip tea?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is also called cat herb or cat balm. It is known primarily as an herb loved by cats, but its use in humans can also bring many benefits. What properties does catnip have? How it works? When is it worth using?

How does catnip work on cats?

Catnip contains a chemical called nepetalactone, which causes unusual behavior in cats, such as rolling, jumping, purring and general excitement. However, this is not the only ingredient in catnip that affects cats. Catnip affects the cat's sense of smell, or more precisely, the olfactory receptor. After smelling this plant, many cats enter a state of euphoria, which can be compared to the state that humans experience after drinking alcohol or other drugs. The surprising fact is that not all cats react to catnip in the same way. It is estimated that approximately 50-70% of cats are sensitive to nepetalactone and react to it with excitement. However, the remaining 30-50% of cats remain indifferent to catnip.

Catnip has many properties that make it not only attractive to cats, but also useful to humans. In addition to nepetalactone, catnip also contains other substances such as essential oils, tannins and bitters. These compounds give catnip its characteristic aroma and flavor.

According to folk medicine, catnip infusion has an antispasmodic, diuretic, sedative and antibacterial effect on people. It is recommended for the following ailments:

- insomnia

- neuroses and headaches

- heart palpitations

- intestinal colic

- diarrhea

- kidney and liver diseases
